Joe's Home Office

This webpage is not on my menu. It is available only from a link for current tutoring students and their families. This is a DRAFT. Your feedback is solicited.

As of January 1, 2026 I will be tutoring at my home office rather than in Suite #3, above Marcos Restaurant.

Welcome to the Historic 1923 Minato Estate in Multnomah Village

My home address is 3525 SW Logan Street. It is about three blocks north of the intersection of SW Capitol Highway and SW 35th Avenue.

Parking

I will try to keep one parking spot right in front of my house available. I will mark it with orange cones for a while until everyone figures it out. If this spot is not available, there are usually spots available on the south side of Logan Street near 35th Avenue. Please avoid parking directly in front of other houses that face the street.

Why the Change?

My wife, Amy, and I are now empty-nesters. We have a free room in our house to make into an office for me. I save money on rent and I get to see Amy more.

Parents are Always Welcome

As with Suite #3, parents (or other authorized adults or older siblings) are always welcome. Parents can sit in the tutoring office with us or they can relax in the front room or the guest bedroom. In fair weather parents can hang out in the front or back yard. If parents want to walk to Multnomah Village there is a pleasant route south on SW 36th Avenue. Gabriel Park is nearby. Of course, you can wait nearby in your car, as many parents do.

Safety

As a school teacher, public and private, even college level, I was never in a room alone with a student. One of the strengths of private tutoring is the magic and efficiency of one-on-one attention. This is one of the challenges and dilemmas of private tutoring. We are all aware of countless cases of adults abusing children. As an adoptive parent, and former classroom teacher, I am well aware of the risk of a child, teen, or young adult being groomed and abused by an adult who "no one thought could do such a thing." Predators are out there. We all need to be careful.

Here is how I an handling this concern:

  1. Parents are always welcome as explained above.

  2. Most of the time I am tutoring, my wife, Amy, will be home.

  3. I will leave the door to my office open unless on rare occasions, Amy needs it closed.

  4. Parents are encouraged to speak with if they have any concerns.

  5. I have references on my About Me page. I will update these soon. I will add some tutoring parents who have worked with me for multiples years with multiple students.

  6. For any parent who wishes, I will set up a Zoom conference so parents can view my tutoring sessions with their child.

  7. I am considering recording tutoring sessions (on Zoom or otherwise) for additional security. Parental input is solicited.

Just Because I Need to Say This

I am honored every time a family trusts me with their child's education and safety. I have been a professional educator since I started tutoring in Fall of 1978. It is not a job for me, it is a calling. I am trusted and respected by generations of students and parents. I give you my word that your child is safe with me.
